How do we consult with our SEN pupils

Consultation with Children and Young People with SEND

Teachers/SENCO and Support Staff will work with children to identify the support needed to meet agreed outcomes.  The provision is planned and interventions are allocated to individual needs. The children take an active role with setting their targets, discussing them with the class teacher/SENCO. It is important that children feel fully involved at every stage of this process and understand why they are involved in additional interventions.  Children are therefore regularly invited to complete questionnaires to pinpoint their strengths and difficulties. They are also invited to share their views at review meetings. This can be developed in a way to meet the needs of the individual child including the use of presentations or short videos

Separate Pupil Questionnaires are also distributed throughout the school year to give all children an opportunity to comment on school development; children with SEN are given opportunities for adults to scribe for them or to record their views verbally.  Children are asked for their opinions on all aspects of school life and are asked to suggest improvements.  One successful example of this is the re-structuring of lunchtimes.  In addition, children can ask their School Council Representatives, Friendship Fixers, Sports Leaders, Head Boy and Head Girl and House Captains to act on their behalf.

Consultation with parents and carers of children and young people with SEND

Ensuring that all children attending St Patrick’s RC Primary School receive provision that maximises their enjoyment and achievement is central to all that we offer.  To achieve this, we are committed to working in partnership with parents and carers to identify their child’s needs and support.  Parents and carers will be involved throughout the process.

There are a range of ways in which we will do this, for example:

• We will hold Pupil Progress Meetings termly;
• We will ask you to complete Parent Questionnaires so that we are informed of your views and so that you are able to have an impact on school development;
• We will encourage ongoing discussions with the class teacher and/or SENCO;
• We will welcome parents and carers to come into school to discuss any concerns they may have;
• We will constantly monitor and assess the progress made by your child. If we feel that your child does not make the progress we expect, parents will be consulted and appropriate steps will be taken to further support your child.   A Special Educational Needs (SEN) Support Plan may be created.  This is a document that records the views of the class teacher, the child and the child’s parent/carer.  It will describe the child’s strengths and difficulties and identify clearly the steps that will be taken to help the child to make progress towards a specific outcome. If the outcome is not reached by an agreed review date it may be appropriate to request specialist support from outside agencies. We will ensure that parents and children are guided supportively throughout this process.
• A small number of children may require an Education Health Care Plan (EHC Plan.) We will guide parents through this process, taking account of their views at every stage.
